  Dymaxion Map Dymaxion-like conformal projection
Creator Buckminster Fuller (1943) Daniel »daan« Strebe, Buckminster Fuller, Oscar S. Adams, L.P. Lee (1943 / 2019)
Group Polyhedral Polyhedral
Property Compromise Conformal
Other Names
  • Fuller Projection
  • Airocean World Map
Remarks A compromise projection onto the surface of an icosahedron, which results in comparatively low angular and areal distortions.

The poor quality of the graticule lines are a consequence of the way the image was rendered, of course it’s no characteristic shortcoming of the Dymaxion map itself.

See Four conformal polyhedric projections and more.
Arrangement by Buckminster Fuller in 1943. Fuller’s projection was not conformal. Mathematical work on conformal projections for regular polyhedra largely originated with Oscar S. Adams from 1925 and onward. L.P. Lee greatly expanded upon and regularized the mathematics in 1976. This application of conformal developments to Fuller’s arrangement is by Daniel “daan” Strebe in 2019.

This pairing is among the list of recommended pairings – but why?
The Dymaxion-like projection is a conformal application of the original compromising arrangement.
